Make a Fabulous Scarf with a T-Shirt

Judging by these projects (Making a Top out of a Man’s Tshirt, Turning Men’s Tshirts into Dresses, and How to Alter a Man’s Tshirt), I love making things using t-shirts! They are comfortable, economical, and are in abundance wherever you go! For this project, we are going to use the lower half of a shirt to make a t-shirt scarf. (The upper half will be saved for another project!)

Make a T-Shirt Scarf

Supplies:

  • T-shirt, any size
  • Long ruler or yardstick
  • Scissors
  • Washable markers (<– affiliate link!)
  • Dye, if desired

Wash and dry the t-shirt, especially if it is new. This removes any chemical sizing from the manufacturer.

Lay the shirt on a flat surface. Use the ruler and a washable marker to draw a line across the shirt approximately 1″ below the sleeves. Cut the top of the shirt away and put it in a safe place… We’ll make another project with it later!

Cut the hem off of the lower portion of the t-shirt.

Fold the remaining portion of the shirt in half and cut along the fold.

Cut each piece apart, and pin the right sides of each piece together. Sew using a serged seam or a zig-zag on a regular sewing machine. If you’d like the scarf to be an infinity scarf, sew the other ends to each other. If not, don’t worry about it! Stitch a hem in one long edge. This will keep the scarf from stretching out and rolling which will distort the look of the scarf.

Use the ruler and a washable marker to draw a line 2″ up from the unhemmed edge. Cut 1/2″ fringe pieces along this 2″ section. Pull each piece as it is cut to make it roll on itself. Knot it at the ends, if desired.

Dye the scarf, if desired. I used Tulip One-Step Tie Dye (because it is AWESOME!). They have awesomely bright colors!

So that is it – another fabulous project using a t-shirt that is quick, easy, and inexpensive! What type of shirt would you use to make a t-shirt scarf – plain or a printed t-shirt? Share your ideas below!
