Easy to Make Holiday Pillow Covers

Beautiful Pillows Perfect for Holiday Decor

These pillows were inspired by two different things – the white glitter and the red fabric. These easy to make holiday pillow covers are quick and the perfect accent to the holidays or anytime! The graphics on the front are cut from heat transfer vinyl which is ironed on the fabric, then the pillow is assembled. The covers also feature a zipper so they can be changed easily and quickly! They are so easy, they can be completed in a couple of hours!

Supplies:

  • Cotton fabric
  • Contrasting thread
  • Matching piping
  • Heat transfer vinyl (or paint and a stencil)
  • Zipper (<– affiliate link!)
  • Sewing machine with a zipper foot

Start by pre-washing the fabric. This removes all of the chemical sizing that is used in fabric production. I wanted these pillows to be covers for pillows I already own. I measured the pillows and added 1″ to the width and the length for the seam allowances.

I used my vinyl cutter to cut the deer and lettering out of white glitter heat transfer vinyl, then ironed the designs on the fabric. A stencil and fabric paint would be another great option to decorate the front of the pillow!

I cut and made my own piping and sewed it around the edges using a zipper foot on my sewing machine. When pinning the piping around a corner, clip the seam allowance on the piping.

To close the end of piping, leave at least 1″ extra then remove the stitching in the fabric over this extra piece. Cut the filler cord where the end meets the beginning, then fold the remaining fabric over about 1/2″. Cover the beginning of the piping with the remaining fabric from the end, then sew the piping in place.

Once the piping is sewn in place, sew the zipper to the bottom of the pillow front under the piping. Sew the other half of the zipper to the lower edge of the back.

Pin the pillow back to the pillow front, then stitch around the sides and the top. Make sure to leave the zipper partially open so the pillow cover can be turned right side out!
