Step-by-Step Guide to Scrappy Quilt Binding
When I use fabric collections like jelly rolls or layer cakes to create a quilt, I prefer to use every piece! I don’t like putting unused pieces in the scrap bin where they’ll never be seen again; it feels like such a waste. For this large quilt I’m currently working on, I decided to use the leftover strips to make the binding, and I’m so glad I did! Join me as I demonstrate how to make scrappy pieced quilt binding quickly and easily!
Supplies:
- Random strips of quilting fabric
- Rotary cutter and clear ruler with 45° markings (<– affiliate link!)
- Scissors
Let’s Begin!
I began by sewing all of my fabric strips together. I stitched them in sets along the long edge with a 1/4″ seam. Do yourself a favor – get a 1/4″ quilting foot for your sewing machine. It makes all the difference!
Once all the pieces were sewn together, I pressed all the seams in one direction and then trimmed the edges to make them straight.
I folded the shorter edge of my fabric piece towards the longer edge and pressed along the diagonal fold. This fold is on the bias, and I will cut all strips from this edge.
Using my scissors, I cut along the pressed fold. Next, I aligned the shorter edge of the cut piece with the shorter edge on the opposite end of the longer piece and stitched them together with a 1/4″ seam to create a quadrilateral shape.
I used a clear ruler and a rotary cutter to cut 2-1/2 inch wide strips along the bias edge until I had used up the entire piece.
Next, I stitched each of the bias strips together to create one long, continuous strip. I loosely wrapped the strip around a card until I was ready to use it.
It turns out that I will have just enough of the binding for my 90″ x 90″ quilt!
