A Super-Handy Tool for Knitting or Crocheting

Sometimes, I get tired of having to corral my yarn when knitting or crocheting. I also have several furry critters that like to make a huge mess out of it! Creating a yarn holder out of a toilet paper stand keeps the yarn clean, off the floor, and out of the paws of yarn bandits! Plus, the yarn can be wrapped on empty cardboard toilet paper rolls which will help the yarn feed smoothly.

I scored this toilet paper holder for free from a house that I was helping renovate. It has a small dent in the base but I didn’t mind – it was free!  I cleaned it up and primed it with my favorite rusty metal primer (<– affiliate link!)…

Then spray painted it in a pretty green-ish color!

I added a brand new roll holder which cost a whopping 97¢.

If you own a yarn winder, the empty card board tubes from a roll of toilet paper or paper towels can be used for winding the yarn. Cut a slit in the tube about half of the length, then slide the tube on the yarn winder.

Wind the yarn as you would normally. The slit will close when the roll is removed from the winder. If you do not own a yarn winder, the yarn can still be wound on the tube by hand.

Place the roll on the holder…

And there you go! A nifty way to keep yarn neatly organized – at least until the cats see it, then all bets are off! The yarn label can also be stored on one of the arms of the holder. Making a yarn holder with a toilet paper stand is easy, and would make a great gift for the crochet or knitting enthusiast! The holder would also work well for thread crochet when making doilies and table runners… Is this a tool you would use or make? Leave a comment below!

I bought one of these on sale today. Wound my kitchen cotton on the tp tube. So far, I’ve spent more time detangling it from the ends of the holder than I have crocheting. I’ll try the feed from the other direction but Im thinking I may need to modify my spools to have raised ends, otherwise my yarn gets wrapped around the spindle.
