Add Style to a Ponytail with These Easy Hair Scrunchies

There are just some things in life I cannot give up no matter how fashion styles change… Scrunchies are one of them! I love to make them in all sorts of colors and I will share easy to make hair scrunchies using a real elastic band, (not a piece of sewing elastic) with a really nifty technique!

Supplies:

  • Fabric scraps
  • Regular hair band (<– affiliate link!)
  • Contrasting thread
  • Hand sewing needle

Cut a fabric strip at approximately 3″ x 12″. Any scrap of fabric will work – quilting fabric, t-shirt fabric, strips from jelly rolls (strips of fabric sold in a roll for quilting), recycled fabric, tie-dyed fabric, etc.

Start by pinning the fabric strip lengthwise around the hairband starting approximately 1″ in from one end, and ending 1″ away from the other end. The hair band will be sewn inside the fabric tube. Trust me on this… Sew a 1/4″ or 1/2″ seam. The seam allowance amount is not too terribly important.

Now here is the “tricky” part… Turn the fabric strip right side out. Yep, it is easy!

Pin the shorter edges together and stitch with a 1/4″ or 1/2″ seam allowance.

Fold the raw edge over at the same amount as the seam allowance and pin the opening closed. Stitch the pinned opening by hand with a needle and thread or cheat like me and use a sewing machine!

Bam!! Welcome back to the 80s!

The width of the strips can be adjusted for different looks. Sometimes, I like the scrunchies to be a bit narrower so i cut the fabric strip at 2″ wide instead of 3″ wide.

The scrunchies are quick and easy to make, plus they make fabulous gifts. This project is also an excellent way to teach a young one to sew!

Do you have an easy way to make hair scrunchies? Do you love them as much as I do? I’d love to hear about it – leave your idea below!
